Top Five Cash Crops in Farmville

If you’ve been playing Farmville for a while, you know that the best way to make coins is the most obvious: farm crops! You can have a lot of fun harvesting trees or collecting items from animals on your farm, but the real money comes from consistently plowing, seeding, and harvesting your crops. But there are so many choices of what to plant in Farmville, and you might be wondering what you should choose. Well, worry no more, because here are the Top 5 crops to plant based on their coin yield.

Methodology

First, a quick work on the methodology. This is really just some simple math that looks at the cost of the seeds and the selling price, which then determines the profit per plot of ground. Then it factors in the growth time to determine the coins per hour that you’ll earn. Remember to pick the best crop that matches your play pattern. For example, having a high-yield crop with a low growth time doesn’t help you if you can’t log in more than once every other day or so.

Finally, know that all of these crops are only available at the higher levels in the game, so I’ve included the level requirement in the table below. You’ll need to be at least level 19 to plant any of the top five seeds. Now on to the top crops!

The Top Five Crops

Crop Level Required Cost Growth Time XP Gain Selling Price Profit per Plot Yield (Coins per Hour)
Tomatoes 20 100 8 hours 1 173 58 7.25
Sugar Cane 31 165 8 hours 1 239 59 7.37
Grapes 19 85 1 day 2 270 coins 170 7.39
Asparagus 37 220 16 hours 2 357 122 7.63
Peas 32 190 1 day 3 381 176 7.65

    While your reasoning is sound, your math is wrong. First of all, you do not tell people that you are subtracting the cost of plowing (15 coins) from the profit per plot. Since that is a cost that is equal no matter which crop is planted, and can be considered a sunk cost anyways, it actually is not essential to your yield output. All the plowing cost does is equally reduce your profit, which skews your yield results. You have to pay to re-plow your field anyways.

    Second, using your own calculations for profit, the yield for grapes, asparagus and peas is incorrect. (I’m ignoring the rounding error on sugar cane and asparagus.) The yield for grapes (170/24) is 7.0833 and for peas (176/24) is 7.3333.

    Finally, it would seem the most logical to include XP as a multiplier, factoring it into yield to create an output that is relevant to XP gained. After all, gaining XP is part of the game–especially if you want to level-up. Just a thought.

    One other thing to consider… each cost actually has an extra 15 coins per planting cycle – plowing costs. I don’t think that that Christie’s comment is quite accurate, as planting Raspberries cycles every 2 hours and Rice cycles every 8… IF (yes, only true addicts would do this) you played consistently and with no missed time, you would spend 45 coins on Rice in one 24 hour period, and 180 coins on raspberries – not an equal reduction in profit… I am not feeling well enough to follow through on all the other math…

    my other point would be that coins and experience need their own figuring, as there are times that one matters more than the other… I am level 8 right now, so my Excel database, which accounts for plow costs and has separate info for experience and coins, is not quite advanced enough to release

    gross margin dollars is the answer. if you have time to fiddle w it every 16 hours then Asparagus is where it’s at. Once a day however, the answer is peas.

    i dunno if its still available but the sweet corn donation is by far the best option. costs 10 coins to plant it, yields 125 coins after only 6 hrs. i moved everything on my farm and locked my chick in a box. lets put it this way i just did the math.
    464 plots
    Plowing= -15 coins +1 exp
    Planting= -10 coins +3 exp
    Harvesting= 125 coins (give or take some experience gained if fertilized by friends)

    after adding all of it up I Profit 46,400 coins and 1,856 exp every 6 hrs. The down side is you only can plant it for a week, but the upside is it doesnt die if you dont harvest it in time. i mean in the last few days i went from having no coins and fighting to keep up with my friends levels to having over 500,000 coins and jumping 4 levels

    The math is basically correct, but as Christie pointed out, you have some crops with random values. Like grapes for example, you say they yield 7.39/hour while your math suggests it should be 7.08333.

    XP is probably not accounted for because most people looking for a guide will be wondering how to get the maximum amount of money.

    But if you want, the most xp crop is Raspberries.
    Math behind that: 1xp every time you plow, multiplied by the size of your field (assuming 12×12 standard) and you have 144xp every 2 hours and 1728xp every day (assuming of course you don’t miss a plant time, and you plant instantaneously ;) ).

    @Christie

    While your theory makes sense, Christie, you forget, or didn’t realize, that FarmVille uses 23-hour days. So instead of (170/24) for grapes, the equation would be (170/23), resulting in 7.39130435, or 7.39, being correct. And instead of (176/24), it should be (176/23), being 7.65217391, or 7.65, also being correct.

    I completely agree with Jack on this one. why are you wasting your time figuring out all the math on what the best plant is, the point of the game is to was a little time while having fun and relaxing. just play the game and don’t worry about the coins or levels. its not like this is an extremely complicated strategy game.

    It was said that the “eggs” would hatch on Dec 7th! I see them in the chicken coup, but cannot get at them! What gives?

    I have not been able to get into farmville lately for some reason now for 3 days. I had poinsettias planted that I am sure are wilted. But I can’t get in………… Have you had any trouble with this?

  14. December 20th, 2009 at 20:30 | #14

    This is a nice try but I think someone should make a better one if it counts the XP and that in a day you can plan 3 times the tomatoes for example…

    Jack, thats just a little harsh, and a tad thoughtless.
    Consider that for some of us, the mathematics behind the game is equally as enjoyable as moving bitmapped representations of tractors from one place to another on your virtual farm ad infinitum. I think “Different strokes for different folks” sums it up. You can enjoy the game “your way” and we will enjoy it, ours :)

    So to summarize the important facts from above

    Calculate based on 23 hour days

    The cost of plowing does need to be accounted for when defining net profit per hour for the daily yield, as it varies according to harvest cycle period

    If your goal is to level faster while making a profit, look for crops that provide more XP than others might, over comparable durations. Typical players have time to harvest once per day, so 1 day 2XP crops are better. Also consider crops with better profit return, but lower XP which may provide a better return, allowing you to purchase items that give instant XP.

    How do you get FV cash?

  18. Cookie
    February 6th, 2010 at 04:27 | #18

    Hey folks some of you have asked about FV cash and how to get it.

    The only way is to buy it, level up, and/or it has been said you could find some FV cash in mystery boxes but I wouldn’t put to much faith in that.

    Yes the good folks who run this game have to get paid too.

    Second and more importantly back on the topic I think the best cash crops really depends on what level you are. I mean some seeds are locked for players under level 37. So to effectively make a top 5 list of cash crops we would have to assume what most players levels on farmville are at. And by the way XP does matter, however This list is about the top 5 CASH CROPS not the top 5 XP CROPS. So no you would not care to much about XP when your trying to boost your net worth on farmville.
